It's funny but there are three sets of chickens I hatched within a month of each other and they have all this space and they still stay in their originol groups. My other half is a deputy head teacher and as part of a school project they paid a company to watch eggs incubate at School ( i've told her to borrow my equipment in future as it cost £300 for 7 days incubation hatched then a week later equipment returned) The 9 eggs that hatched we kept they had been handled by the school kids quite a lot and they are nothing but trouble they always escape and won't go into the hen house without persuasion

I have just written an article for the church magazine concerning battery farming and talking about the more natural life my own hens live. I thought if I could let people know just how active a 'real' chicken is and how they love a varied diet and just what the diet of a battery hen consists of then I could perhaps make one or two think twice before buying battery produced eggs. I tried to convey their personalities in an effort to make people realize that hens are not simply egg machines. Don't know if it will do any good, but I'm of the opinion that if we all do what we can, however small, it all adds up to something much bigger. Well done Walldanzig, I hope they give you many happy hours.

Well done Bluemoon! The more people know the better. Unfortunately there are those to whom price alone matters but I'm sure there will be some who just don't realise the cost to the hens.

The more people who know about the "life" of a battery hen, the better! I do though feel so sorry for those people who simply can't afford to buy eggs from non-battery chickens. 15 eggs for £1.50 in Asda last week, plus a big bag of potatoes for £1 = egg and chips for a family of 4 or 5 for 3 days. Boring I know, but I've been there and done that

I tried to persuade someone to change from cheap eggs to free range and she said "but I only use them for cooking" Doh!

our ex-bats grew their feathers back after a couple of months on called feathers alot grew them all in two days!! your lucky your ex-bats have more feathers then most
