  • Any good Poultry books for Christmas list?

Fancy some chooks next year....only a few, maybe half a dozen.

Any recommendations for good books, not too complicated or expensive, with plenty of pictures/diagrams worth putting on my Crimbo wants list?

tough one snagar, there are a lot of books out there, we got lots from the library before we started, some were very poor, keeping chickens was the most informative, cant remember who wrote it but its part of a series, i.e. keeping pigs etc.
cant see why you need one with the knowledge you have here! lol.
    good luck.

Check out Poultrychat.com, there's some recommendations on there. Katie Thear's book is supposed to be very good, also the Storey guide. I bought "Hens in the garden, eggs in the kitchen" which is a bit light on hens but has lots of good recipes for using up eggs.

        Thanks for the replies everyone!

I've just bought Home Poultry Keeping by Dr Geoffrey Eley off eBay and it seems quite simplistic (just what I am looking for, doh!)

I haven't started reading it in earnest yet as I already have about six half finished books lying at the side of the bed on various subjects and I really need to finish reading them first!

I am still reading a Victorian Kitchen Gardeners Diary that I got in my MOM pack!

Its the joined up letters I can't get the hang of! Lol

I would agree with birdiewife too. Storey guide is very comprehensive but readable, though I think it might be american written so some of the laws, products etc are different. Katie Thear is great and writes for GYO and country smallholding (plus more) she has a variety of good books which are very readable and she knows her stuff about british rules n regs. I also have Living with Chickens by jay rossier which is also american written but is quite a good book for starting out, though i soon found i had more questions n wanted more info than it could give

Our house is full of books. So much information on so many subjects but if a book tells you only a couple of things you didn't know before then its worth having!

I've now finished reading the book and think it was maybe a bit TOO simplistic!
Here's me, never kept chickens before but feel I need a lot more information. Thought about a chicken encycloedia (with breed names and piccies of course)........the hunt goes on!!! Anyway for now, I'll wait and see what's in Santa;s sack, then take it from there!
