  • Have I done the right thing?

One of my Amber Links didn't come out of the henhouse this morning, she was perched when I looked inside, very unusual so I picked her up [no struggle, also unusual] and had a look only to see she had what I can only describe as a tube poking around 2in out of her bottom.

I went and prepared a large bowl with warm water and some disenfectant to bathe her to loosen the tube which I did with the help of my OH.

The tube seemed to be the same as the inside membrane of an egg, it broke as I bathed her and it contained what looked like the white of an egg. The rest of the tube popped back into her bottom. Bathed the area around her bottom and put vaseline in and around her bottom.

What is this tube, am I going to lose her , I popped her into the henhouse to perch as its cold & wet here. By the way she was fine yesterday

How is she now? You can tell quite quicky if they are going to perk up.

The tube could actually be a prolapse - which without looking at her is hard to tell. If it is a prolapse then there is no 1 answer some birds do it once and never again, some do it everytime, if its an evertime thing then she not going to do so well, if its and occasional then if you look after her well she may well be fine.

As the membrane broke and egg white appeared to come out and then went back up inside - keep an eye out for infection. It could just have been a softie coming from perhaps a fright!

Its difficult to diagnose a bird you can;t see so these are only suggestions if you are really worried a trip to the vet is needed.

glad she seems fine - just watch for infection incase any egg went back up inside her. Hopefully fingers crossed it was a 1 off - it happens!
