A labradoodle is not a breed it is a cross it will not become a breed untill they breed true, if at present you were to mate a pair of LDs you would get some labrador type some poodle type and the rest just common or garden mongrels which after all is just what the parents are mongrels ( the benefit if any of the LDs is they dont shed their coat )

A friend of mine used to breed 'Malties', Maltese cross Yorkie. They sold for what I would think of as silly prices!
wrt selling ill hens, the shop needs telling that you intend to report them for allowing the sale of goods which are 'not of merchantable quality' (Sale of Goods Act, I bet it applies to livestock as well). Trading Standards might be more effective than RSPCA....
All breeds are a result of crossing but it takes generations and many, many years of breeding for type and function and needs to be under taken by someone who knows what they are doing!!
I breed Indian Game cross Light Sussex poultry and hope they will become dual purpose birds. But, if I took it seriously, it would take me a long time to breed the perfect bird. Mine do me though.
As for cross-breed dogs!! Cross and sell them by all means as long as you can find good homes and a good price but, please!! do not give them silly names and charge huge prices for them. Mongrel dogs are mongrel dogs (and a cross between two breeds IS a mongrel) but charge mongrel prices and still make sure that the pup has a responsible and permanent home.
Sorry, this is a soap-box of mine!

        A) I didn't say these crosses were new breeds, just that that is where new breeds start from
        B) OK what about 'Bluebell' chickens, etc? Just as much crossbreds as a Labradoddle.
        C) I don't breed dogs, never have and never will, because there are more than enough out there (I would always encourage people who want dogs to get rescued ones, and owners of crosses or mongrels to get them neutered), but some deliberate first crosses are interesting in their own right, to appeal to certain people or for a particular purpose, and I think the definition of a mongrel does NOT include first crosses.

Polly - Would love to hear more about your IG x LS meat birds. Do you cross IG cock with LS hen or the other way round?

Hilary - good to hear you back on the Vine. Have you been on holiday?
