  • Odd first egg

Bluebell (my Bluebell hen, no points for originality there) has finally laid her first egg. The other two girls bought at the same time have been laying for a couple of weeks now, small and perfectly formed little eggs.

I think Bluebell needs a little more practice, proud as she may be of her egg, its not quite there yet...

It weighs a teeny 14g and probably wont make much of an omlette. Am I right in thinking this is just down to 'first try nerves' and nothing more serious?

    How cute!

I wouldn't worry, they sometimes get it wrong. Mine have laid eggs without shells, small eggs, huge eggs, strange shaped eggs.

nothing to worry about - it takes time to settle down and get it right, most new layers lay a smaller egg than when they are in full swing - shes perhaps not as far along as the others yet - not a bad thing though, like children they all develop in their own time and you should never compare two together!

I have had a few of these - and much smaller ones (down to a superb 5g). Have had two odd skinny ones the last two days and was sure that all the girls were in lay (4 eggs one day) so no explanation for the funny ones here

Fascinating shape! Like a large liquorice torpedo.

Our eggs have all been proper egg shapes, just in miniature. The smallest so far was 34g. Shirl, that 5g must have been quite something!

Madmax and the boys thought I was winding them up and it (actually they as we have had about 3 that size now) was really a Cadbury mini egg

No, no yolk in it and she's not bothered trying again since. Maybe she caught us sniggering at it and was offended!

lol - perhaps she heard us gossiping behind her back!!

No yolk how strange - she obviously isn't ready to be laying yet then

One of ours laid a teeny egg with no yolk - about her 2nd week of laying. Never had one since though. I think it's a practice egg!
