Sorry to drag this up, just looking at early posts out of curiosty and found this thread!.....I use really big plant saucers to hold light sand and diatom earth so my broodies can have a dust bath when they're cooped up for a few weeks sitting......

One of my nestboxes is a laundry basket with a breeze block in the bottom so the don't knock it over and then filled with straw. They love it!

We stuck with the washing up bowls. I used a hot knife to cut out a 'u' shape in the front for easy access. The girls love them, but will insist on only using one of the two, so they are always queuing.

..they are crazy like that aren't they. Mine have ample room to lay in nestboxes, yet just use the one!

We've done some ikea hacking - but not for the chickens. Our small flat-screen TV and radio/tape/dvd are standing on a unit made form 2 very plain cheap bedside tables with left over oak flooring on top.

I do love Ikea. They are just so innovative. I love the brilliant use of space in their room sets, but you do need high ceilings to implement the ideas. And the designers...despite the idiotic names they give to products...are very talented. Even the packaging of some of the things is a design triumph.

                  Oh I like this too!

I wish I had found this before taking the easy method and buying a pre-built coop. My only excuse is time restriction
