Hi all

Just wanted to say I am so glad I got my chucks, always wanted some from being a little girl. Was just sick of the negative comments when I mentioned it to people, saying they were 'dirty smelly animals.' I always argued that all animals are if you don't look after them! Finally glad I've taken the plunge and got some, they are lovely! I want more!

Chickens are great - no more dirty or smelly than a rabbit thats not looked after properly. We love them and are glad you love yours too

Maybe those people who think hens are dirty smelly things are also the ones who think there's a factory that adds the shells to the eggs so they all come out looking identical!!

I think they are less smelly than rabbits and they give us something back! It's been an education for us and all the fam. around us and made everyone appreciate what actually happens with egg production, makes it all real. We are so far removed from our food-ie.tescos pre.wrapped that actually going to collect from the end of your garden is a real eye opener.I can't imagine not having hens now,and I am a real newbie. They arrived in spring this year and so glad I took the plunge.

If you take care to remove dropping a couple of times a day, the run will stay reasonably good. Ours isn't smelly even in the hot weather. You can't describe the delight of having them come up on your knee when you go and sit in their run, though. They give us far more than eggs, our girls!

have to say, I love my chucks, but they arent quite as easy as everyone told me they were....

Red mites, food infestations, chucks being poorly, egg bound, baths and so much rain their run will be a mud bath today! all in my 1st month of having them

nothing like being thrown in at the deepend

My girls are very glad I found this forum too! When I think of some of the numpty things I did when we first got them, I shudder. We've had lots of much-needed sound advice from lovely Grapes, although I know I've still got a lot to learn.

Also, after months of patient pecking and squawking the girls now have us properly trained, and thankfully they didn't suffer too badly as a result of my mistakes, just got very, very porky in the early months.

You're like me, MrsC, I'd wanted chooks since I was a girl. I had this fantasy about scattering corn and a flock of little red hens coming to eat it and me collecting the eggs in a straw-lined basket. And next month, when I finally get the basket, it will all have come true! I hope you have as much fun with your girls as I'm having with mine.
