  • Sexing of chick 4ks& 4 days old

Hello to everyone. Sometime ago I asked for advice on a hen with broken leg, after approx 8-10 weeks she is well, eating and today we let her back in with her pal and 7 new exbatts. She has a limp but not dragging leg. Please can anyone advise on how we sex the recent new addition. Unfortunately, I have to admit to my ignorance, the mum is a red (with gold around) neck and dad is the very aggressive white with black markings (previous post) he & brother extremely aggressiveTheir only saving grace is that they are extremely protective of hens, however they have had to be put in separate area as they attack everything, especially my hubby Sorry for rambling, but how do we know if the little one, very cute, now mainly white, with black coming on wings, is a boy or gir?. Thanks you to everyone for all your advice and assistance.

Once I have worked out how to put pics on I will upload all pics.

There are lots of factors...I'm assuming it's not a sex linked breed, or you'd know the sex by now. You can usually start to tell by the development of the comb and wattles...usually grow more quickly and turn redder quicker on a boy. You can also tell by the tail feathers (dependant on breed) and the neck feathers...boys are a little more pointy then their female friends.

It's hard, and some breeds are harder to sex than others. If all else fails..if it lays an egg, you've got a girl...if it crows...Oh Oh!!

Good luck....if it's any help, there are loads of us in the same boat at the moment - I'm trying to sex two batches of chicks at the moment...unfortunately, mine are a hard breed to guess at!
I love to talk about nothing. It's the only thing I know anything about!!

Hi Bephlam, thanks for your reply. Trouble is that "it's" father is a light sussex and mother is a big Red bird, not a warren. Baby is very sharp and I have a feeling it is going to be a boy. Oh, not another boy!. Still, we have never had a live chick before and we aim to keep it. Again, many thanks.
