We have one very precious, very cute & very chirpy little baby!
It said it's Hello to the world at lunchish time...popped back here from picnic before going to the lottie to check on the others!(It's the one that spent time in my bra...AKA past advice fromNicos...Cheers Lovely...it obviously helped!
Can't hear anything from the other two,but will keep them in the incy overnight even though I don't think they've made it!
It was a particularly odd looking thing when it first hatched, already has a fairly prominent comb & whilst it's feathers were still damp looked like we'd hatched a monster!...but a cute monster!
It's hatched with what looks like a little dry poo attatched to it's bum,but looks like it's attatched by a a little thread.Should I try to soak it off with wet cotton wool?
I've taken it out of the incy as it was getting too hot, even after water it was panting with beak open.

Thankyou again everyone for your help & encouragement...I'm sure without it I'd have just gone into a state of panic & not had a clue what to do...or still wandering around with an egg in my bra!Cheers!xxx...and one from baby,x

Oh you should see it!(sorry,no pic loading abilities!)...after two mad rushes to Asda for a suitable lamp...first one Andi got was 25W max...wasn't happy leaving it on all night with a 40W bulb,so back to get a different lamp!...kiddies are starting to want to read to themselves in bed,so none is money down the drain!
Anyway, the lamp is good...Boo(I know, shouldn't have named it,might be a boy,but at least it's a multisex name),who we thought would be lonely has fallen asleep splayed out, almost on it's back, legs outstretched & generally making the most of the space!Looks more like a dog than chick!
Daisy found an old lambswool/fleecy baby blanket & Ermentrude the cow in case it needs a snuggle.I've aimed the lamp into a corner so if it gets too warm,at least there should be cooler parts to go.
Still not sure how we'll play it tomorrow.Having read your advice BP I'm pleased we didn't try popping it with Dandelion tonight...still a bit jittery on it's feet.
Forgot to say,it's a Maran/Norfolk Grey cross. Not sure if I should be concerned about the obvious comb & wattles...obviously not huge nor red,but very obviously there.

                Just read the news!

Good stuff! I knew you'd have 1 hatch. Incy did its job. Shame no more have come out yet - or have they???

No more. There was a very faint glimmer of hope mid evening.
We'd decided it was a bit risky putting chick with Dandelion last night as the others are up & about & *Boo was still quite weak & wobbly,so first thought was to take the other eggs out of incy, turn the heat right down & use it for the night. One of the eggs gave a very pathetic little tap, what I imagine was it's last little bit of energy.Popped it back in,just in case, but unfortunately it wasn't to be.
Boo(who I know shouldn't really have a name seeing as she may be a he!)slept well, woke a little while ago & had a little food & drink & is now back sleeping.
I on the other hand, discovered that although our couch is very comfy for a daytime nap, isn't quite so when it's for the whole night!

Oh my goodness! Have just read all the instalments - a real cliff hangar! Am so pleased for you that Boo has hatched successfully -- am broody for baby chicks myself now!

Worth all the stress di? so pleased for you.

If its ok pop it under mom tonight, when its dark (ish) and shes all settled down pop it under from the rear, in the morning she should get up as normal and as she can't count she will have no idea, make sure you are there first thing just to make sure!

I think the real stress is going to be later!!!
Although I know the sensible thing is to put her with the others,I'm terrified it may all go horribly wrong & our little survivor will be no more!
I've also got the kiddies hysterically telling me they don't want me to do it...not only will I feel crap for the chick if it goes wrong, but also the kiddies!
No firm decision has been made, but I'm trying to make a couple of phonecalls to see if any of our egg supplier friends may have a spare day old to pop in with it.If they have, then our options remain open...if not, with Dandelion it is!

Thats a great idea di - anything up to a couple of days old would be ok. You would be welcome to foster some of our chicks but you are too far away!

Still trying to decide!A lady we know has two 2or3 day olds,so the option is there.
But!!!Still thinking maybe Dandelion is the best bet.If Boo turns out to be a boy,it'll be a lot easier to handle if we've not had the close contact a home reared one needs.
Possible problem...but I may just be looking for them? The three chicks Dandelion already has are white/pale Buff, whereas Boo is black? Will the difference in colour make her more suspicious?

Its the best option really if you can do it di - less stress on you, but at least you have a plan B.

As for colour and sex - depends on what breed they are.
