  • Hemcore

Hi, I had to let my Chickens go this week, as I'm moving house and they can't come with me. (we're moving to a flat, although we have a garden it's at a food premisis, with lots of other restraunts near by, and one sight of a rodent and it'll be my chickens) so I was wondering if any-one would like some hemcore as i have a bale and half in my shed, they guy who has taken my girls uses hay. If any-one's interested please PM me.
    Thank you

Convert the guy to Hemcore - as I think Hay is bad for them! I'm sure Auntie Mo will come along to confirm!

So sorry you had to lose your 'Laydees' you must be very sad

Glutton - I will stand up in defence of hay and say it is fine as long as it is fresh and dry, with no mould in it. I use it in broody nests as it "shapes" better and sometimes in the main nesting boxes (along with straw). As long as it is changed regularly then it is fine.

            Shame to loose your girls.

I favour avary grade wood chip personally with dust extracted sawdust under the perches.

Sell me on hemcore - my local farm (where I get the girls sacks of pellet) sells it for the horsey people.
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!

I'm a fan of Hemcore too, although our feed merchant stocks Aubiose - same stuff, different manufacturer - They now also stock something called 'Bliss' which is basically Hemcore which has been impregnated with citronella to repel insects. I was thinking of buying some as I'll need a new bale next week. Would it help to keep red mite at bay do you think?

Sorry you've had to give up your girls, PLM.

                  heres the marketing blurb
Hemp Technology Ltd: Products - Hemcore Animal Bedding

it has citronella so helps keep it smelling nice and it doesnt clump up (although i do poo pick every day) and i just find it easier to use and it deffinately composts down much quicker than wood chip

                    Sorry about your girls!
We had to rehome our three bantams when we moved a couple of years ago.I was more devastated watching them go than I was losing the cat.
We got our first bale of hemcore when the first lot of chicks hatched,at the time thought it was a bit pricey, but we only use it in the nestboxes & it lasted for ages.
I'm not using anything other than newspaper on the floors at present as I'm a little paranoid any type of woodshavings could harbour mites, don't know if the citronella would keep them at bay or not?
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

I'm a Hemcore fan too, use it all over the place! I'm using shredded paper (junk mail) in the broody coop on top of Hemcore. It smells nice, doesn't clump, easy to compost, and it's soft on the ex-batts bare bums I've never used hay because of the possible mould spore problem, the less risks to my girls' chests the better in my view. It's a pity you're so far away from me, I could certainly use what you've got left
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

ok - hand up - hemcore user too!

Don;t really use hay due to dust and mold, but it is actually ok if its fresh and dry - but thats the trick getting it fresh and dry!

I find hemore great, its cheaper than the same size woodchip - always a bonus in my opinion. Smells nice, seems comfy enough, composts much quicker and unlike chip if they ingest it then it doesnt seem to cause problems.

not sure if citronella repells mites, we still get them, whether its in the same numbers I have no idea!
