I've got one in my mixed flock of hybrids. Smashing layer - hasn't missed a day since September last year. She's quite relaxed but doesn't get picked on by anyone - I'd guess she's about 5th in pecking order out of 9. Not a big girl but lays a decent sized egg - yesterdays and todays both 60g. She's easy to handle - all mine are handled regularly - but not so keen on going back in the run if there's nothing on offer treatwise. Nice bird.

Not very easy to get hold of round here. They are bred in Scotland and one particular poultry supplier somewhat north of me used to get a lot as day-olds, pass them on to others round here, and we could buy them at point of lay. However, the chap who used to get them from Up North has retired and several of the suppliers' web-sites that I checked out this time last year when we were deciding what we wanted, now don't have them, or still have the blurb but marked 'not available for 2009'. Shame, as I'd decided that's what I wanted but I couldn't get them.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

I have a black rock called Doris. She lays big eggs (75g) and lays most days. Occasionaly she lays a WHOPPER (about once a month), her record is 115g.
She is docile and can be handled. We think of her as the fat waddling one as she is bigger than the other 2 hens I have, and never gets to the treats first!
I have read they are good outside as bred with tighter packed feathers so more water-proof!

A neighbour of my daughter has kept chickens for more than 60 years, he shows some pure breeds and sells eggs to finance his hobby. He's owned, bred and shown just about every breed you can think of over the years, but for egg layers he won't have anything but black rocks.Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.
