    Ok tehre are 2 things.

    1) A respiratory infection, this will require antibiotics, it will fast become obvious if it is a respiratory infection as teh chicken will go donwhill

    2) a common cold - and it is actually quite common - antibiotics will not help your bird in this case. there are several prepared products on the market you can use and thay are all based around garlic (which is great for colds) The most commonly used in birds is a product called respite, some suppliers stock it - ours does now cos we kept pestering. but usually get it offline. the other one we use is a garlic and fenugreek tablet from dorwest herbs.

You will find a chicken with a cold will not go downhill that fast and many get over it on their own, but any we get that have colds just get one of teh above for a week and they seem to get over it.

    hope that helps

Would garlic powder in their drinking water work?
We got a large bag for about three pounds from our local feed store...I pop a bit in,when I remember(at least a couple of times a week)to hopefully ward off nasties.

should do - its the garlic thats the active ingredient, but go steady otherwise if you put in too much you get garlicky eggs out the other end! great for making garlic mayo - but not so good in a fry up!!

My first thought would be gapeworm, but if you have wormed them then unlikely. What did you worm them with? Flubenvet is the best one and covers gapeworm. Could she have an impacted or sour crop? If you are not very experienced I would suggest you get a more experienced keeper to examine her and give you some advice, or a vet.

I add the garlic powder to their pellets. One week garlic powder and one week poultry spice. Now that we is egg producing I shall do taste tests

hi, thank you very much for your reply, i wormed her with flubenvent, as i read that it could be grapeworm, it so odd for the last several hours she seems happy scratching about with the other friends, but then on the odd occasion she just sits there and does the thing as i mentioned before. I have been given a number of a chap that i have been told is quite a chick expert, will contact him and see if he would be able to look at her for me. Also just to mention none of the others show any signs of this at all.

Well Eco, mine are used to the children constantly checking the nestboxes for eggs and just lay regardless. Some hens have even laid an egg into mine or my daughter's hand (bit wet and sticky)!! They always seem to get on with it despite what is going on around them.

I think I'd burst with pride if any of mine laid an egg in my hand
