  • How to make a Chook go broody?

I know that you leave the eggs in the nest and they should go broody if they have an inclination too but how long will it take and how many eggs should I leave there?

Thats a how long is a piece of string question, some will go broody on 3 eggs after a couple of days and some take weeks!!

depends on the breeds, some like silkies and pekins go quickly - saying that however I have a silkie whos never gone broody

I went on holiday for a week and left my daughters and a friend to look after the chooks. Number 1 daughter is a bit nervous around the chooks but was fine locking them in at night. Friend was on egg-collection duty and forgot to check in one of the nest boxes. Result? 1 broody chook sitting on 5 infertile eggs
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

so fingers crossed then would like to try them under a broody rather than the incy.

I've been sneaky as one of my girls always sneaks back into the nest box after I turf her out at night so I placed the eggs in her usual spot

You could get her in a broody coop on her own anyway, on a few eggs, feed her grain (and grit only, no pellets) to heat her up and see what happens. You may need to shut her in for 24 hours to give her the idea. They sometimes won't go until they are on their own. If you were nearer me I'd loan/give you a broody bantam - I've always got one or two knocking around! One started going broody in Jan/Feb and I've still got a couple broody now (different ones although some have sat twice this year). Between them they've hatched about 35 chicks. Good luck!

Aww thank you! don't temp me lol I might just drive up there!

The grain... it it the mixed corn only? I have a single level rabbit hutch which I'm going to use for the chicks, I can put her in there.

Day 0 and all is well the eggs got turned and temp and humidity where it should be!

I've no incy and no broody, but earlier this week I was checking out the feed merchants for goose food (geese feed?) and their goose grower pellets are only available until October. Are chick crumbs seasonal too? I'm not asking for any particular reason, you understand.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

I didn't know you could persuade a hen to go broody? I just thought it happened when she decided it would happen?

Apparently Snadger I read that it's us taking the eggs outa the nest box that actually stops them going broody(well most of the time) How accurate the info is, we'll have to see

Just had a mental image of a chook climbing up this egg mountain using crampons and an icepick, just to be able to sit on the top of them!!!!!!!
