Well done Maureen and Basil! I've got two cream legbars off today (one male and one female) and another pipping. This is my last "official" hatch but we found the Light Sussex who was sitting away (on 10 eggs) and have moved her from her site in the field (very exposed after heavy rainstorm) to the safety of a coop, so expect some more in a couple of weeks.

Well the total so far is 5. 1's hatched here, and it's a yellow one. There's 2 of each colour at my friend's, so it looks as if they're sexable, but which colour is which? I think Corax Aurata once said about sexing Bluebelles, so if you're around (or Hilary ) then can you help please?

You'll get fed up of me soon

Total babies at friends house is 6 hatched but 1 died, 3 grey/blue ones and 2 yellow ones. Total hatched here is 2, one of each, and another 2 eggs pipping. One of the pipping eggs is one I'd put a question mark on because when I candled it the other day I wasn't sure if it was a viable one. Shows how much I know!! Glad I left it where it was

If they are 'second generation' bluebelles, there is no guarantee on sex-linkage to colour. It is the first cross that produces the Bluebelles which provides the link. If a strong-coloured breed cockerel mates a weaker-coloured breed hen, the hen chicks take after Daddy, and the cockerel chicks are Mummy's colour. The strenght of the colour is not necessarily related to appearance (although all the crosses I know about the strong colour is also the darker colour).
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

pretty much what i was going to say Hillary - sex linked is usually only carried on the 1st generation, it weakens through generations, however you may have some sex linkage there due to the colours you are showing.

it is also worth remebering that on 2nd generation crosses like these you may actually not get a bluebelle but infact get a throwback to one of the origional birds that was crossed, the birds carry the genetic for all 3 birds - the 2 origional birds and the bluebell gene itself so as such if the right genetics merge you can get some interesting offspring - however having said that the majority if not all of them will show bluebelle trait, but there is a chance of something else!!

Basic chicken genetics - very quickly

When you breed chickens, the male chicks ALWAYS receive their genetic information found in the breeder hen's chromosomes. However, female chicks can't acquire traits from the breeder hen.

Therefore, remember that when a hen with certain special characteristics is bred with a rooster without it, all the male chicks will receive it but not the females. Pullets usually are just like their father, while all males end up just like their mother.

This said if they are sex linked - the blue are boys - but then technically based on this girls should also be blue as they get genetics from their father - and basil is blue!

hehehehe - just to confuse you more

Hmmm, does this stand for legbars? I am considering breeding but want birds big enough for the table that can be auto-sexed so I can detach from the cockerals. My gamekeeper friend up the road said he will 'do' my culls in return for half
