Ooooooooooooo thanks Hilary and BP this is getting more muddled I think we've probably got a right mixture and it'll be a "lucky dip" as to what's what. Paul & Shelly have 2 yellows, 2 greys and a black, and I've got 1 yellow and 1 grey. Mums and Dad are (as far as I know and have been told) are all Meadowsweet Bluebelles and Basil's not related to any of the girls. The girls might not be related either! Someone on Freecycle who very kindly gave me some laminate flooring panels wants 6 while they're still littlies, so they'll maybe have to have 2 of each colour ........................ though what the pipping eggs will turn out to be is anybody's guess. They're all really cute and gorgeous though

Well try and put it out of your mind until the Spring Let's look at the practicalities - it's now Autumn, the weather is getting cooler, the days are getting shorter. Would it be fair to start some chickies off now? They won't hatch until the beginning of October, they'll need heat for a few weeks, then it'll be really cold and wet and dark and miserable outside. Where would you keep the in-betweenies? Have I put you off yet? Didn't think so , my friends who're hatching out one lot for me are starting off another lot for themselves

from a business point of view now is the best time to hatch - ok so you have to over winter them but they will be the right size and pol just intime for easter next year when everyone is looking to buy!!!

practically though you have to heat them for longer that in the spring/summer so you need a space to be able to do this!

No, Lynda was November!! anyway, number 3 hatched here at 1.50pm and Becci's 3 girls were here to see it so they're well pleased Older chicks have had lots of cuddles from the girls so they're tired out now. Latest one looks like another light grey. Nothing happening under Precious yet - as far as I can tell anyway

Feeling a little bit sad right now. The last chick that hatched this afternoon (number 3) has had to be put to sleep. I thought it was doing a slimy poo, but when I looked closer, there was a load of its intestine coming out of its bottom. Paul came over and we both agreed that the poor little thing would suffer unnecessarily if we left it, no way would that amount of prolapsed intestine go back on its own, so he did the deed. It's the first time I've had to face this sort of thing, but if I'm going to hatch chicks, then I should expect that not every one is going to be perfect

Sorry to hear it Maureen, but hopefully not something you have to deal with too regularly - it's upsetting to despatch a tiny chick. I had to do one with splay leg a little while back - not a nice deed.

If a strong-coloured breed cockerel mates a weaker-coloured breed hen, the hen chicks take after Daddy, and the cockerel chicks are Mummy's colour. Hello - sorry not been here for a bit....

As I suspect Basil of being all Marans anyway the blues are most likely to be girls but I wouldn't like to put any money on it......
