We are also looking into getting a couple of chooks and the sound thing did worry me, but I reckonned as those behind and next door have dogs (which bark away at times-but don't cause too much hassle) and next door but one has a pigeon loft that noone here would be in a position to complain anyway lol. I then found out that the other neighbours behind us already have chooks! I had no idea at all, but now having listened out for it have occasionally heard the cluck cluck of egg laying, was a nice soothing sound if anything.
Mind you we are in a semi rural area and on a still summer night hear cows and sheep.

My advice Jenny is to settle in to your new house, get to know your neighbours and then go for it!
I'm very lucky....we have a run with 3 girls in a small back garden. My neigbours are very happy with the chooks....one regularly gives them rice and pasta and the kids love them!
The "bok, bok, bok" happy chicken sounds are very calming and the "shouting" when an egg has been laid usually happens when people are away at work!

I've never had any rat trouble, but have had to put a "LID" on the pen after stray dogs attacked the poor ladies a few weeks ago.

The only comments I've had from my neighbours are about how lovely they are, and about how suprisingly quiet they are. And one told me he'd tried keeping hens a few years ago - but they turned out to be cockerels.

When we were at our old house we had some illegal bantams(rental agreement said no pets).Similar to as Flummery said earlier,I used to get really paranoid every time they laid an egg or were startled by something, but as we got away with it for about a year(had to move due to the LL selling, not chook discovery!)I think it's safe to say that noone much minded!
It's one of those noises that you notice more if you're worried about it.
All the best in your new home & hope you're well on the way to getting on with the neighbours!x

My four have been lovely and ladylike and soft voiced for the six days they have been with me, until they took my poor cat to task this evening.

Even so, they weren't really very loud, just outraged squawking and wing flapping for a few minutes.

Gypsy cat beat it over two fences before she looked back, poor love.
If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing to excess

Thank you so much - you've all really helped to put my mind at rest! I always get great advice here

Just waiting for our survey to come back now and then (hopefully, if the roof's not going to fall off etc) we'll be signing for the new house soon - so I'll be sussing out the neighbours asap!
