They are lactose intolerant to be fair and I never give milk of any sort as a general rule but then again it is advised to give live yoghurt to a bird with sour crop due to the live culture in it, but like Hillary says the lactose is changed in yoghurt!

Thanks, All very interesting. As I have four hens who go to bed in the henhouse and four who think the great outdoors is best I will think about a hot mash in the evening for them.

Image of hens with a readibrek 'glow' .........

Which featured the young and still unknown Charlie Chaplin. I remember it too.

With the last lot, when we were living pretty high up in the Border hills, I'd give them extra bedding, a hot mash in the morning, and when necessary I'd dig them a path in the snow to a dug-out patch for them to play in, as sometimes the snow was deeper than the hens. They usually came out, but would head back to the shed in a blizzard.

Most of the time it isn't too cold in Norf Lunnon so may I give my ladies additive-free snap, crackle & pop with hot water instead of hot milk (friend's children won't eat 'em)?
