Yeah, exactly my thought (although I might consider a snake keeper)

I have 7 cockerals currently being fattened up and the autosexing allowed me to move them onto a different diet. I was telling a couple of lads at work and they said they would buy them off me when they get up to weight. I said I wouldn't sell them but if they wanted to give me a tenner just because that was fine and I would give them the birds as a gift

I'm sure I will continue to raise both boys and girls even if I do know the sex at hatch. As several of you have said, it seems wrong to kill a perfectly healthy chick, when sometimes they have fought so hard to get out of their shell and into the world.

Thats what does it for me too RH - I love watching them hatch to kill then straight away seems weird - Grow them on and eat them much better that way anyways, at least they have a purpose in life then.

As for eating banties, not much to eat but jointed up they make a nice chicken and apricot casserole and the frames go to the dogs to crunch up

Exactly what I am doing, fattening 4 young cockerels, enoying their antics and planning my future dinner........

It wouldn't be a problem for me as I currently buy frozen day old chicks for my snakes,(they work out at around 10 pence each)
ratsnakes eat about one day old chick a week and I have never had a snake that required live food in 40 years of snake keeping, fresh killed food is always better than defrosted which has spent an unspecified time in a freezer.
will my reptile egg incubator be suitable for hatching chicks,I know the eggs will require turning, but am unsure of the temperature/humidity requirements?

Don't know how many snakes you have, but if you are only feeding one per week per snake then to me it hardly seems worth it trying to hatch your own chicks, as they all hatch at once and you will have to freeze them anyway, they won't last long "fresh". Perhaps you could try and come to an arrangement with a chicken keeper/breeder in your area?

I once purchased a heating element designed to be installed in an insulated box in order to make an incubator. I wanted it for poultry, but the person who recommended the item used his for reptiles. His worked OK for his purpose, mine was OK for my purpose.
Can't remember the humidity settings for chooks, but pretty sure they would be significantly lower than for reptiles.

I don't want to hatch chicks to feed my snakes I am about to start keeping chooks as well,I just have no idea for the incubation regime,if I could hatch autosexing breeds then the snakes can have the males.

Nothing wrong with a bit of dual purpose approach to life!

My ex-batt hatched 4 Welsummer chicks which I sexed with help from the net. 3 boys and 1 girl. Couldn't have culled at hatch though. For one I might have been wrong but at 8 weeks old it's obvious that I got it right and I'm still dreading having to cull.
