  • How high can your chickens jump/fly?

My neighbour got his chooks on Wednesday and they have settled in well to their new home/run. The run is 7' high, with the house about 2 - 3' high. Most of the roof of the run is covered. At 0630am he looked out of his window to see all four birds sat on the last roof strut, looking out onto the road, saying hello to everyone going past!
We think they got onto the roof of their house, but how they got up the rest of the gap, up onto the roof is a mystery!
    Any ideas?
It certainly gave me a giggle and a funny start to the day!
PS He's now covered up the gap, needless to say.

one of mine regularly flew out of the 6ft high pen so i had to net it - they are free ranging now so i've taken the pen down and she doesnt seem to want to fly anywhere now - so well over 7ft is no obstacle to a bird that wants freedom.....

The first night on getting my posh birds, 1 was 8ft off the ground on the apex of my greenhouse and 2 were roosting on a 6ft fence so you either have to clip 1 wing or be aware that they'll launch off anything that they can!

Never test the depth of the water with both feet

The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory....

Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

as high as they need to ... actually mine have been quite good really, cos they cant get out of their run, and they dont usually bother when in the garden ... oh except when phoenix went over next door, cos she wanted to help next doors gardeners with their digging .... and when the ex batts decided to take the others for a walk down the street ... but my garden still hasn't got a fence all the way round lol

I spent several hundred squids 7 years ago fencing in my patio and gravel boarding the rest of the garden to puppy proof it.

*Wonders how much it's gonna cost to net over the top to stop my Laydees making a break for the park behind Chateau Cluck*

Our runs are 2 metres high, unroofed and they can't get out of them. They are large though, with only 6 or 7 chickens in each one, so it might be that they've never tried.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.
