  • My hen Snowdrop is dead

My little girls darling light sussex hen, who has given us such joy died today. We found her sneezing, with snotty nose a week ago so put her in warm box in barn, and let her wander round the patio in the sun during the day, we wormed her, deloused- just in case but she got progressively worse - she wheezed like she had asthma today. I could feel pea size, tender lump in her gullet (tumour?) she just collapsed, so I had to finish her off, which was horrible. My little girl is inconsolable, we dug a lovely grave, put flowers on it and a cross with her name on. The vet said if any of the others look ill to pop them in to her incase its something contagious but that these things happen..

Sorry about snowdrop - not sure I like your vets attitude though, if the others show signs of being sick find a vet other than this one and get them treated, antibiotics will clear up a respiratory infection in a couple of days. Unfortunatley there are still a lot of vets out there that do not seem to have grasped the concept that these are loved pets and not a comercial farm animal - thankfully our vet is an absolute star and has yet to be put off by anything we have thrown at him!

My heart just skipped a beat when I read that title and I'm relieved it's not what I thought it was but I am sorry about your hen.

                Big hugs petal.

I had a young Dorking and an old ex bat die recently both on the same night with exactly the same symptoms as yours.

If it's any consolation this was a good few weeks ago and up to now no other occurances, so like mine, it could have been a blip with no problems with the others!

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I've only had my girls 3 days and already I'd be gutted if anything happened to them. I don't really know what to say. Hope it gets easier over time.

I'm so glad you chamged your title Petal. I don't know anything about keeping hens but I do know they get sick and die - as with all creatures on earth. It's heartbreaking when an animal you are attached to dies. My sympathy to you and your little girl.

                        Petal,

I'm sorry you and your daughter have lost Snowdrop. I think you're extremely brave and caring to have put an end to Snowdrop's suffering yourself. I think that expresses real, true and selfless love.

Big (((((hugs))))) to you all, having just lost two hens in just over a week, I know how you are feeling. I was so sad when I went to let them out this morning and only two hens came running, rather than four.... One of my remaining hens, the only one of our original trio, is also a light sussex called Snowdrop!

Time is a great healer, but children do find these things very hard (as do we of course!) - my little girl made a lovely painted gravestone when her little hen died earlier this year (yes, I've lost 3 this year ). It helped her to do something creative, and I'm sure making a lovely grave was a good send off for your Snowdrop.

                            That's really sad.
..and for you to put her out of her misery- have you ever done that before? I think it's the only time I could do it.
                            Very brave and caring. x
