  • The dastardly deed!

OK, so we are getting some birds specifically for meat in shortly (thanks to Lynda and a friendly farmer near us)...

Is there a book or website that those of you who breed birds for eating would recommend?

Mr OWG will do the actual 'deed', but I'll be plucking, cleaning, hanging etc.

We intend to joint the birds rather than have them as roasting birds, as we tend to use more chicken pieces than anything else.

Any advice or words of wisdom??

Well- I'm getting some Marans- not just for the chocolate eggs- but also the gals are almost as meaty as the lads.
However- someone asked me if I'd ever eaten Maran meat before cos not everyone likes it....I wonder what on earth THAT means??????

Sorry- no other ability to help...although, I suggest you get ones with short legs so they'll be easier to catch

I butterflied my chooks. Great for barbies or half butterflies freeze well.

I watched a you tube thingy on how to do it.............dead easy!

Can you post me a link? I want some meat birds too, not too worried about the 'deed' but rather the plucking and gutting!

The only advice I can think of is the obvious don't name them, can you keep them seperately, I'd find it easier if they weren't with the pet chooks!

No finesse with me I'm afraid..............I just hoic everything out! I know you can use the neck and certain bits from inside but for simpicity it all goes in the bin.
Butterflying means I can get every bit of gummins from the internal cavity also!

we keep our meat growers seperatley - its easier cos they have different food!

I'm afraid no finess to how we do birds either, do save some of the innards though - chicken hearts are nice boiled and salted and some of the other bits are good for the dogs. If we joint a chicken then the dogs get the frame to crunch over - they tend to hang around when we do any prep strangley enough!!

Oh goodness, we'll be saving the livers - yum!

I'm sure the dogs will be waiting with baited breath for the rest of the innards.... bleuch!

If the green mucky thing (gallbladder? bile duct?) is discarded can the cats and dogs have the rest of the innards (except heart and liver which would be for me)?

I once saw one of those Ozzie outback 'living off the land' guys catch a large fish, gut it, throw the fish back in the water and cook the guts!
