  • Flubenvet 1% - How do you feed it?

My Flubenvet 1% powder arrived today. I thought I would get layers mash to mix it with as I don't think it'll mix well with pellets.

How do you feed Flubenvet to your chooks?

mix it with a sack of corn then feed them the corn in the late afternoon - they love corn so much they scoff it down - of course some get more that others but that is the same with anything you feed them

I'll be watching this thread closely, as I've just taken delivery of mine today too! I have to say that as I only have two hens now (), I was erring towards the grape method. Time to do a thread search methinks...

My red mite powder came too - I had no idea it smelt so strong, fair cleared the airways when I opened up the Jiffy bag!

I'm going to try the individual method.

Put as much as will be held on the tip of a sharp knife and transfer it to a grape or raspberry and feed it as a treat to chook #1 and then repeat for subsequent chooks.

I have three chooks. Wouldn't do it this way for more than half a dozen I think

I put a small amount inside a sultana and make sure each chook only has one sultana.
They adore sultanas- and don't even notice there's medication inside
It's one dose a day for a week isn't it ????...good grief - I think my memory is packing in

I just mix it with the layers pellets and feed from a bowl for a week rather than a feeder. Seems to stick well as the powder is so fine.

with only 2 pips - its well worth just doing the grape/treat method as you know that both chooks have had eaxcly what they should have, its quick and easy - unfortunatley with over 100 its not so quick or easy !!!

                  Hmmmm....

Although it sounds the surest method, I'm not sure I'd get the dosage right if I tried grapes or sultanas. The instructions on the tub are, imho, not all that clear, yet when you buy it the ads usually have blurb about dosing responsibly.

I'm a bit worried about over-dosing my precious girls. I wish it would state how much each chook needs over the 7 days...I have no idea exactly how much feed my chooks get through in a week as I haven't measured it. Perhaps I ought to although some of the girls eat more pellets than the others and they aren't necessarily the biggest chooks either.

#1 son, with his MA Chems, has cast his eye over the ingredients and thinks the girls would have to eat an awful awful lot in order to OD.

It will be very unlikely you will overdose them Jules. The dosing rate for pheasants is higher and weight for weight they are similar to young chickens. If you buy the gamekeeper pack (240g) which I do, I believe the flubendazole content is higher too, ie more than 1%. I tend to err on the higher side anyway. I mix mine straight into a bucket of pellets and go through that until gone, then mix another bucketful.

If you want to try individual dosing, a wet piece of bread with a smear of powder on it works well too.

I did it as per instructions. You'd think I was dead law-abiding wouldn't you? I mixed up the 2 kg dosage, they ate that, then I mixed another. Seemed to work.

I've used all the above methods (sometimes more than one method at a time!) and mine are still going ok! I think there's a pretty big margin of error allowed particularly in the 60g tub which is for "domestic poultry keepers" as RH has said the bigger tub is even stronger.

Jules,I found the instructions a little confusing...I think for the same reasons as you that I'd not a clue how much mine eat in a wek.(I think I had in my heads that I HAD to mix up a weeks worth at the start, but obviously as/if it runs out you just mix a little more.
I just mixed an amount up & as it ran out mixed up another(with pellets & it stuck fine!).
One of those things I worried loads about doing,& then when I did it wondered what the heck I'd worried about!

I'm going with the grape method, though a couple of weeks ago when Sadie was on antibiotics trying to make sure she got the doctored one wasn't easy, and I can see this being even worse. I can't put it in feed though as they tend to scatter it everywhere and don't always hoover it all up.
