  • Worrying egg.

About three weeks ago Marigold laid a really tiny egg....it was her first in weeks & the last.
Not sure why we didn't crack it open before, but last night we did.....and YUK!
The white & yolk had coagulated around what looked like a little kidney bean & there was also another odd looking presence of yukness.(I have taken a pic but until Andi is home can't post it)Andi's first thoughts were that it was the beginnings of a baby...until I pointed out she's never been with a cock & the egg hasn't been sat on....not to mention it looked nowt like an embryo!
Not sure if anyone can remember, but she was poorly quite a while back with lots of white discharge from her vent & needed daily cleaning & I also applied Caneston & gave her live yogurt.Does this egg explain anything more?
She still has the odd mucky white bot...which I have the joy of cleanin g in a bit,but other than that seems perfectly well in every other way...despite not laying.

If she still has a white discharge this could well be a kidney infection. I think you need to get her checked out by a vet, or at least get some antibiotics prescribed. Kidney infections can affect the reproductive system which would explain the lack of eggs (and odd ones). With antibiotic treatment she will recover from a kidney infection, but her future egg production may be affected permanently.

I don't know that she's still definately "discharging",although her vent feathers are often mucky with white, there's no "deposits" anywhere.....when she was properly poorly there was evidence in the coop & run, whereas now her droppings are all normal,it's just her feathers that possibly cause alarm?(and that egg that Andi hasn't managed to download pics of)
When we got chooks we agreed to no vets....but then along came Marigold!....why do these things have to happen to the favoured ones!!!(not that I don't love them all,but Marigold has always been a lil special!...Bang goes the £45 I was gonna treat my dentist to!)
I might give the Caneston another shot...it seemed to clear things up last time, maybe I should have carried on with it for a while longer to totally rid whatever it was ridding?

Does anyone have any ideas as to what was going on with the egg...sorry,I know a picture might help but Andi can't find the lead...the bean type thing in the middle of it was approx the size of a mung bean. The other bit was a little larger but clear with reddish speks.

Apparently so. I recently read that worms can sometimes travel up the oviduct and get encased in shell along with the normal egg contents.

Sorry,I know this is from a while ago,but just managed to get the pics loaded.

They're a little blurred, but hopefully might give someone an idea as to what's going on with it.
The middle pic is the small egg that it was in next to a normal sized one.

Sorry....didn't mean to make anyone feel poorly!
Just totally baffled & a little concerned as to what's caused it!

I wonder if it could be a sort of lash? You know when bits of the oviduct break off and appear in the nest box? Could it have got mixed up with an egg on its way? Just a thought.
Is the chook ok now and laying as normal? Or is she the one who stopped laying?

                        It's Marigold.
That was the first egg she'd laid in several weeks and now several weeks later it's the last!
She's fine in every other way.(touch wood, her mucky vent feathers also seem a thing of the past)
