Within 2 days our young pullet, a white star has become paraysed, she started by limping but now can't get up or raise her head. We have separated her as soon as she went lame, to get her to rest. Any ideas? I am tempted to cull her just in case?

If she can't walk, stand, eat, drink and is obviously unhappy, then I'm so sorry, but I think culling is the only answer. She may have had a stroke, or a head injury, or it may be an infection, but keep your eye on the others too just in case any start showing similar symptoms, in which case it's a vet's visitMy girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

sorry to say I agree with Aunty Mo. It's not fair to her to keep her going longer than required. {hugs}Never test the depth of the water with both feet

I had a chicken that was born was born with a splayed leg I never noticed it untill I moved them outside . It got worse and and eventually couldnt walk or get to the food or water I had to cull it as it was cruel to keep it. It's not easy but for a chicken it's not fair to keep it in this state

Could it be Mareks disease?
I know you can get them vaccinated against it but don't know if there's any cure for it once they've got it.the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

I don't really understand that about Mareks...I've heard the same, but also I've read that it's a disease that is present frequently(an airborne herpes type thing)& that often birds get it & become carriers but only a few will ever show symptoms or become ill from it.the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

My husband took the dog to vets today for her annual booster, and he asked vet at same time about chicken, vet said she thinks it sounds physical as opposed to a virus if the chicken looks healthy but can't walk - legs are not 'splayed' and none of others are showing symptoms.
