Campbells are great if you only want eggs, but can be flighty. If you are considering eaters, there are Silver Appleyards, Welsh Harlequins and Cayugas, proper dual purpose types. I like the Cayugas, they are black (with a beautiful green sheen) and lay proper 'duck egg green' eggs. All 3 of these breeds lay almost as many eggs as the Campbells (and bigger eggs). Of course the downside is that they eat a bit more.
Yes, the ducks make things muddy and trample all over things... I think the chickens are a bit more delicate about things... they don't tip the pond out all over the place and wallow in in like the ducks do!!!

My Indian Runner duck lays huge 'duck egg green' eggs as well... the Campbells lay white ones.

I like Cayugas, think they will be the next type we try out

I found this website very useful:

Omlet UK | Guide | Ducks
Further to your later comment, the site also has a list of breeds with information on each one such as their History, Behaviour, and variety. They also have star ratings based on Appearance, Friendliness, Hardiness, Egg Production etc. And also price.

Omlet UK | Breed Information | Ducks
Very useful for pre-duck purchase investigation.

It's almost as if I work for the site!

:I used to have ducks years ago, mix of indian runners, campbellx and mallards. Very friendly..bribery. But sh.. everywhere. Now have geese, same problem but bigger . I have a kiddies pool with big baulks of timber round for a step up. It easy to tip out, usualy every three days to a week.
Tip.sit your pond on well drained hard standing or when they sloosh it around and you empty it you'll end up with a smelly swamp.

I would go with runners for eggs - they're prettier than campbells (not biased honest) I love Silver Appleyards but they are big and greedy!

They look big to my uniformed eyes.

Very cute. *Wonders how long the water will stay that clean*
