  • The time has come!!!

Well,I've been a bit of a wimp for a few weeks now & have avoided going in the Boys run.(their food and water bowls are right by the fence so I can top them up without going in & leave the cleaning to Andi!)

Andi's just got home with news that his favourite boy went for him a couple of times today whilst he was cleaning them out!

Think it's actually made it a bit easier,Andi's always had a real soft spot for him...(The rather handsome Norfolk Grey)...but think he may have just signed his death warrant!!!...The NG,not Andi!!!)

Not a paricularily pleasant task Di...........but sometimes a necessary one.

I have three cockerels (possibly four!) at the allotment (whittled down from eight) and vowed that as soon as I got complaints from the neighbours these bonny lads would have to go.

Strangely the rather decent neighbours must have found out about this and are always asking nicely about there welfare and even feeding the brutes.............so for now they stay.

I think if I won the lottery I would buy an Isalnd and fill it with all the cockerels that no one wanted.................what a bonny Island that would be!

The time has come here too Rowan's starting to show signs of aggression towards me, and Basil's already attacked me once, so I've made arrangements for the deed to be done next Saturday - that's unless I can sell or re-home them before then They're both big boys now so there'll be some good dinners at least. I'll be sad to see them go, but I don't think the stress of having them around is doing my health much good!

In a strange way I think the attack has made it a little easier...there's no way we could keep a vicious/protective cock with the kiddies and actually I have been a little nervous of them myself for a few weeks.
I think Andi will go up there on his own in the morning to see if one of the chappies that have said they'll do it for us are there.
At the moment he's of the feeling that he should watch & learn & in the future do it himself, but I've reitterated that if he doesn't feel that he can then there's no shame!
I actually feel a lot more blaze(sc?)about it than I thought I would,I've been distancing myself from them since knowing they were boys...think the problem will be when Boo's bigger....and if his attitude at 6/7 weeks is anything to go by,I have a funny feeling he's gonna be unpredictable!

Maureen - What a shame, I know you were going to get rid of Basil but Rowan too? Any chance he might settle down when Basil goes?
Di - Norfolk Greys do have a reputation for being "disagreeable" so don't blame you. Can't risk it with the children.
Kev - Find someone who is experienced at dispatching and get them to do the job for you. Light Sussex make good eating though so if you can fatten them up to table weight then find a butcher who will do the whole process I would go down that route. We generally do our own but do have a local butcher who will "process" a whole batch if we have a load that need doing all at once.
Fingers crossed all our cocks are quiet and unaggressive so far. Even our old Welsummer who has had battles in the past with the loose bantams is now sharing his harem with a young Light Sussex and no squabbles at all between the two. All the youngsters are growing up together (male and female), although I will separate out the breeding stock from the eating at some stage when they are bigger. They are all about 3 - 4 months or so at the moment. Even the loose cocks (4 pretty boys, too lovely to eat) are running around the place with no sign of aggression between them.

Well I advertised Rowan with 2 pullets and Basil with 2 hens on the Poultry Ads website yesterday and have just had an enquiry about Rowan Someone's coming to see him tomorrow, so it looks (fingers crossed!) as if he'll be moving house I'd rather that than the other option really
