  • Dead chick.

Came home to find one of my 6/7 week old Polish Bantams dead in the corner of the ark. Just one of those things do you think? Showed no signs of ill health.

Hi redthorn, strange isn't it. Just worried in case it was some disease and have passed onto the hens. Although they are in their own house and run they have pecked about near the ark with the chicks in.

chicks and chooks both can make one worry! I'm reasonably comfortable in thinking your girls will be fine, and keep a close eye on your chicks

This time of year it's maybe a bit too early to be taking chicks off heat completely so soon? Are you 100% sure she was 6 to 7 weeks and not 5 to 6 weeks? At that age and at this time of year I would keep them inside for a good while longer under heat. Not saying this was the reason........... just a possibility!

Hi Snadger, thanks for the advice. I bought them from someone at the allotment who knows someone, she was a lot smaller, so maybe that was why? Totally new to hens, and chicks, just couldn't resist them! Feel awful now as it was cold last night, the others are bigger, do you think they will be ok 2nite or should I bring them in?

                Reply soon please! Worried now!

If she was significantly smaller than the others chances are there was something wrong with her anyway, if she was from the same hatch. Difficult to say what, not having seen the bird. If you suspect they are younger than 6 weeks then they need to be under a bit of heat at night, but if they are fully feathered then providing their ark is dry and draught-proof then they should be ok.

Hi, thanks for your reply, they are fully feathered. She did seem a bit sorry for herself thinking about, like the runt of the litter (only way I can describe it really.) They have lots of straw and the ark is warm and dry and draught proof, they are spoilt like the girls. I feel slightly more relaxed now, thankyou!
