  • Rescued hen!

After sorting my hens a freind at the allotment commented "Is that one of your brown hens running free on your plot"? Quick as a flash and in unison we each said "It is now" (Jokingly......I may add!)

After chasing it for a while I returned to my chooks and tried to get them to stand still long enough to get a head count. Nope..........it aint mine says I!

With the fox taking loads of hens round about lately, I thought I had better try and catch it for its own safety.

After 20 minutes chasing it I eventually managed to corner it and threw my coat over it.
By this time it was starting to get dark so I put it in with my LS and Minorcas until I decided what to do with it.
Poor thing was getting attacked by all three of them so plan B was called for.
I made ready the broody hut with straw water and food and after recueing it a second time billeted in there for tonight. At least it will be safe. I'll put the feelers out at the allotments tomorrow but I know that if I ask anyone "Have you lost a chook?" they will all shout YES in unison.
A good description of it will do................and not just a brown hen!

I am slightly worried that its original owner may think I'm trying to steal it!

you could always post a notice up lost hen found description required for release. At least the poor girl will only be bullied and not eaten!
Never test the depth of the water with both feet

The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory....

Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

If it was one of mine breaking for the border I'd be very grateful that you rescued her twice!

Does the hen have any distinctive marks which will enable her original slave to claim her back?

She's one lucky hen but if she can get out of wherever she came from then surely a fox can get in?

No distintive markings but she is very young, is in full feather, has a good covering of flesh on her, has a red comb but isn't laying cos she wouldn't crouch to be caught (And she's a sweet little thing!)

I have an idea who will claim her but she seems in too good a nick for one of his scraggy chickens!

One of the guys at the allotments lets his hens roam, on the assumption the growing season is finished and they will spoil nowt.(He always says "Oh, they must have escaped") It saves him feeding them and usually they return at evening
This doesn't look like one of his scraggy chickens............. although I know he'll claim it if he gets a chance!

Make sure you say so if he does try and claim it Receipt from the place he bought it needed at the very least, I should think...?

If she's got 2 legs with 4 toes on each foot, 2 eyes in her head, a beak and said "bwarkbokbok" when you caught her .................................... she's mine

I got a bit of space now that Rowan & 2 girls have gone
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

Seriuosly, keep shtum, keep chicken! Anyone who'se really bothered will make more noise than the hen did when you chased it, you'll know for sure.

Fingers crossed the owner doesnt turns up

Im with Hilly, if someone who deserves her back has lost her, they will be the one asking questions around the allotments - Just like you or I would Snadge..

If they can't be a*sed to ask where she's gone - then do they deserve her back?

I'd be already nudging my gals over to make room for one more. <wink>

I agree with others Snadger, if nobody asks about a hen then finders keepers! Well done for catching her, she sounds speedy

Nope......not yet. I've asked three chook keepers and she aint theirs.

Three more posiblilities but I won't see them until the weekend.

She layed me an egg to help to pay for her board and lodgings though!
