  • Help please - just found 30 eggs under the hen house!!!!

Bit late putting the girls to bed, took out the torch and check under the hen house, found 30 eggs! Are they safe to eat, anyway to tell how old they are? Have 3 girls laying in the house (well 4 upto 1 week ago.) I have 8 in total, the youngest a White Star who is showing signs of lay (around 24 weeks now.)

Put them in a deep dish of water, if they float chuck em. If they sink they are fresh and if they are halfway (if you get me) then use them quick. Any worries, break them into a cup and check before using.
    Happy Gardening,

we've had the same thing a couple of times but didnt feel happy to eat them as we had no idea how old they were either. with hindsight i suppose we could have floated them in water but i didnt know about that then!

as shirley said... hopefully you'll even have some old enough to hard boil and peel!
Never test the depth of the water with both feet

Hi guys, just b4 Shirl posted, I said to the OH (memory of cooking in school) that you can tell by putting in water. Then Shirl confirmed that. Got at least 7 huge ones, cracked one open, a double yoker!!!! Yum! Egg recipes please!

Brill!..sneaky things aren't they??? ( makes mental note to hunt around my chook coop and run- I'm only getting 0-2 eggs per day- maybe one of them is hiding them...although I'm putting it down to moulting...I could of course be in for a pleasant surprise too!)

It is funny isn't it, we just laughed at the bucketful of eggs in the kitchen last night. White Star laid her first egg today, plus 3 others in hen house and 4 under the hen house. More eggs!
