  • Help - marans eyes wont open..

UPON INSPECTING THE GIRLS THIS MORNING WHILST FEEDING THEM, I NOTICED ONE OF THE MARANS WAS MISSING.

I FOUND HER STILL IN THE COOP FEELING VERY SORRY FOR HERSELF.
AFTER PICKING HER UP (she would never allow this if well) I NOTICED HER EYES WERE SHUT TIGHT... I BATHED THEM AND ONE HAS PARTLY OPENED, BUT SHE IS IN ALL SENSE OF THE WORD "BLIND".

I READ UP A LITTLE AND FOUND CONJUNCTIVITUS OR IN MORE EXTREME CASES SINUS PROBLEMS COULD BE THE CAUSE?

ANYONE COME ACROSS THIS BEFORE? IS IT CONTAGEOUS? ANY ADVICE ON TREATING IT WOULD BE VERY APPRECIATIVELY ACCEPTED.

Oh dear Smoggy!! If she was mine, I'd be off to the vet I think, if it's conjunctivitis she'll probably need antibiotics as well as some drops or ointment to put on her eyes. Hope she's ok
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

I know conjunctivitus is very smittle in humans as it stopped Necastle United players from training together for a good while!

I'd pop her somewhere away from the others just in case it is contagious. If she's that poorly, she won't need much space for hopefully the short time she's poorly.

            Hahahaha, was that their excuse?!!

Smoggy, I'd agree with the advice to see a vet - I know it can be a bit costly sometimes, but if your other girls end up poorly too...

Also, if you could just check that your CAPS lock is not pressed? Writing all in capitals does seem a bit like shouting

Have you tried bathing her eyes with warm salt water?
the moisture should help unstick them, and the salt is a mild antiseptic.
Once the eyes open, you can check to see if they are inflamed/red/gunky.

Having read this though.......it might be worth giving your vet a ring to see if they would prescribe antibiotic eye drops if necessary. You'll probably have to take the gal with you .

Got her trucked up for the night, she is feeding normally now and one of her eyes is open after cleaning. The other however is completely closed, no discharge - extremely dry. Will check again tomorrow and clean and give anti biotics again..

Put her on her own tonight to be safe..

Soz about caps Saz, was just panicking.
