Pleased you managed to get yourself sorted with some antibiotics!....did they giggle???

Not sure about egg withdrawal?Wasn't there a thread a while back saying that once a chook had had antibiotics you could no longer sell the eggs.....*ever!!!...but the general consensus was that a week or so after the course had finished they'd be safe for eating?
My guess would be that as meat/eggs we buy in probably contain traces of antibiotic & other additives added to their feed, eggs from one chook that had had them is going to pose very little risk(if that's the word)to you...the amounts that make it to the egg will surely be almost negligable in human terms???

Maybe best not to take my word for it though!

Hope she's back to her normal self soon & the cat doesn't make you pay for too long for taking her for her jabs!x

*more a case of research hasn't been done to prove they are safe as opposed to research saying they're not.

3.30 appointment- they didn't seem phased by my request!

I'm sort of glad I don't have to take her in- the symptoms are straight forward today- but if she doesn't respond quickly I'll take her in in case it's the beginnings of something more serious...they just asked if there was any black discolouring on the side of her face.(I'll see what they say about egg withdrawal)
I'll certainly not play at vets when it comes to health matters

Sort of glad it wasn't one of her brothers- cos they'll be ready for the pot in a couple of weeks!

Nicos, I'm sure I read a thread on here that said egg withdrawal is necessary for the duration of the antibiotic and one week after cessation.

Another poster said s/he has always eaten the eggs (but not sold them) when antibiotics are administered, without ill effect.

Haven't read on here that administering antibiotics means that can no longer be sold EVER.

OK- DEFRA vet says it varies from one antibiotic to another-from no withdrawal time to more than 3 weeks- so best mention it to the vet who is prescribing....

Will let you know what he says.

Sorry Nicos...I didn't remember it to cause concern nor confusion....knowing me I'm remembering something totally different to antibiotics!
Hopefully the vet will know more than me!!!

On the leaflet that came with Tylan it said 1 day egg withdrawal but 7 days before they could be slaughtered for eating.
Most of the ones who've had Baytril have been ex-batts who have gone off lay anyway when they're ill.
I tend to withdraw the eggs for the same length of time they've been on the antibiotics plus 2 days for safety margin.

Hope Lily responds to the antibiotic. Our vet always says scramble the eggs and feed them back to the chooks for one week after medication. When asked if he would eat them he says he would personally but is obliged to say differently. I've eaten the eggs when the girls were wormed with sheep wormer and when the girls have eaten growers pellets with medication in. The girls that have had antibiotics however are oldies that don't lay any more anyway. The vet says battery hens are fed on lots of medication anyway which is one of the reasons they often don't live long after rescue.

                    Well- that was interesting!
He's given me Baytril tablets which sould be really easy to administer ( hidden in a sultana!!!) I was worried about giving it in a syringe via the mouth in case I choked her!

Dose 7.5mg per day for 10 days. Simples!

Lets just hope it works quickly for her!

OK- I asked about withdrawal of eggs in case she stats laying and he said- aww- it's such a small dose- it's no problem- just make sure the egg is well cooked to destroy the antibiotic!

That's an interesting approach...esp as I Googled this....

The veterinary formulary - Google Books

                    ( see top right paragraph!!!!)

                    Clear as mud now!

That's good! Let's hope it does the trick for her. I've always found Baytril works well for my girls. Decided not to follow your link to the veterinary formulary - can't cope with any more confusion at my age

Well- that couldn't have been easier- didn't even need to touch her!!!(she's a bit timid at the moment)

The others enjoyed their sultanas too!

I hope she responds to it quickly Nicos.
Don't like to think of poor chooks with earache.

I have read this thread with great interest, as my Omlet is still not right. She has what I can describe as a twitch, not a nod, but a sort of circular corkscrew movement and is just perched away from the others and seems puffed up.

We've done the worming. Should I try a further worming dose or try the vets....I dont know who lays which eggs so I will have to see about egg withdrawl

She gets up and moves quite quickly away from you, if you try and pick her up

If you're using Flubenvet you don't have to withdraw eggs and Flubenvet is the only wormer which will deal with gapeworm. I'd be inclined to give Omlet another course of Flubenvet and use double strength and put some Poultry Spice in their communal food to give a health boost.

Well- last time I saw Lily she was quite lively and running about the field , then stopping to do her funny neck thing.
OH put them to bed- and he said she really didn't look too good- perhaps cos it was pretty dark and her balance was worse because of that?
I've left her to sleep- but have the heaby geebies wondering if I've poisoned her with tablets instead of liquid antibiotics ( yup- I can worry the sox off an elephant!)
