  • head shaking

one of my girls shakes her head from time to time, with the odd sneeze, its been going on for a couple of weeks now, i have been giving them some Poultry drink garlic etc but no luck so far.

i have just finished worming them with Flubenvet, first time (only had them 12 weeks or so) i was wondering if it was gape worm but the Flubenvet should have cleared them out (i did give this chicken double dose just in case)

any ideas or am just getting a bit cluckey!

    thanks

Well- I would guess a a sinus infection and you need antibiotics from the vet!!

...nope- I'm no expert- but it's something I discounted for my gal's head shaking/rolling problem

Apparently the bone can get infected if left too long....mind you I'm sure that's an extreme case!!!!

May be two unconnected symptoms, ie the sneezing could be a cold, or slight allergic reaction to dust in bedding. The head shaking could be irritation due to parasites. If you have just wormed them it's probably unlikely to be gapeworm. With gapeworm they literally "gape" with their beaks open and look like they are gasping for breath (in bad cases).

I would give her a good check over tonight for lice/mites and treat if necessary. Colds should go away by themselves in a few days.

sometimes birds get a bit of dry seed husk stuck in their nostrils, and will sneeze, scratch or shake to try and dislodge it

Just to let you know that I've had this head shaking and done the fluenvet route, perhaps check her crop - mine is inflated on Omlet and looks like sour crop...off to the vet tonight so we will see

Well as reported in the scary thread, Omlet has been to the vet, she has been given antibiotics - now I have to find out which are her eggs - especially since I cant separate them

Maybe this is one of the times when you could use chicken-nappies Disposable of course, she'd lay her egg in the nappy along with all the poo

Chickens do the strangest thing to you!, just been to the vet he couldn't see much wrong but gave me a course of Baytril.

The veterinary nurses were all over Laveder (Pekin) especially when she went to sleep while being examined-very cute etc, i dont think they see many Chickens

                      Thanks for your concern Nicos

The relief is that they've not diagnosed something awful!!!...they may not see many chooks- but would surely recognise something dreadful/notifiable???

Did you get liquid or tablets out of interest????

                        How does she seem today?
