Yes it's happened to my girls, dog attack this afternoon. OH phoned this PM and he never phones just for a chat so knew something was wrong. Even joked to my friend that somethings up with the hens, they've got out or something and as soon as I heard his voice knew it was bad.New neighbours dogs had found a hole in their fence and found their way to my peaceful garden. I was only thinking this AM how lucky I have been, no illness or any probs. Anyway, there is some humour to this. OH happened to be home early working on the house when he heard almighty commotion and thought but that's coming from over the road, only to look out and see neighbour fighting off a staffordshire bull terrier! Her son had heard knocking at the front door, opened it and said 'it's a chicken!' My Babs ran up the stairs and hid in a book case, bum sticking out(found her later in the same position) Martin( the son ) shut the door quickly , catching the dogs head in the door and then fought it off with broom and lots of expletives!! ( that's all the humour, love the idea that she found a safe haven!) OH ran over to help. Neighour caught hold of dog and found phone number and OH phoned owner. Meanwhile they heard more commotion in our garden. On the way back to the garden, OH ran into Staff. chasing Belinda, he grabbed her and threw her into house and shut the door. Last hen was being chased around the veg patch, ( there was a collie type dog as well, owner has two little darlings!) as OH arrived dog grabbed chook by the neck and shook but dropped her when everyone started yelling. Again OH grabbed chicken and threw her in the house. At this point he phoned me. I didn't know what I was coming home to and nor did he. He really thought he would need to be doing the deed of putting out misery. But, this is how we are now. I checked all over. Babs absolutely fine,no damage as she had the sense to run to my neighbours house ( of course she knew they would be in!). Betty, lots of bald patches but no actual damage, just very quiet and jittery, Belinda is the worry. She has a broke wing and skin damage,I was covered in blood after holding her to check her. Has lost loads off feathers, so I am not holding out much hope for her. I have shut them all in the coop and given treat type food, Belinda the only one not eating. If she does last the night, has anyone else had hen survive with a broken wing and have they been OK? I have been so lucky that my oh was here and I have wonderful neighbours, and that Babs picked their door because I don't think the others would have been so helpful. Despite the stress of all this, I am still laughing inside at the image of Babs knocking at their door and teenage boy answering to terrified chook!! Priceless.

Good God!
A tragi-comedy!
It took my surviving 3 a couple of days to calm down after my dogs did the dirty deed, but none of them were injured.
Hopefully Richmond and Bramble will be along soon and able to advise about Belinda's broken wing.
So sorry to hear about this. I hope you and OH are going to hold the new neighbours to account. If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing to excess

What is it with all these irresponsible dog owners just lately? sorry but this has made me so angry!!! I'm pleased that 2 of your chooks don't seem too bad, and hopefully there'll be some help for the broken wing, fingers crossed she survives. What right do people have to let their dogs go exactly wherever they please without any thought for possible bad consequences? The owner does have to be reported to the police and or dog warden to make sure they don't let this sort of thing happens again because they weren't on leads.
Rant over nowMy girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

I think a serious conversation to that effect with your neighbours is called for Lettucegrow and apart from compensating you for vet fees and damage caused by their dogs trespass, an insistence that they dog proof their garden or fund electric fencing around your perimeter to protect your chooks. If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing to excess

I'm shocked and horrified about the number of dog attacks we've been subjected to over the last few months!
It's shocking!
Hope your girls are ok. They certainly deserve to survive after that!I love to talk about nothing. It's the only thing I know anything about!!

I know bephlam,it does seem there has been a lot, and I kept thinking I was safe and how awful it must be..... and here I am going through it myself with my poor chooks. I have been up and down the garden having a peep( hence being up so late) and so far so good. They are all calm and alive!! I keep thinking how scared they must have been. Strange thing was that when I got here and picked each of them up, there was no struggling when I held them and checked them over. Am I kidding myself, or did they feel safe at last. I don't think I am going to sleep much tonight!!Gardening forever- housework whenever

This makes me so cross. I have dogs and I adore them; for that reason they could never be in a position to do something like this because I'd be too afraid of losing them. They're never out of my sight, even when in our garden. I love my chickens too and if a dog did something like this I'd be heartbroken. I hope the injured one perks up, Lettuce. I love the story about the intelligent one going to a neighbour for help.Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Just read this Lettuce, what a shock for you. At least the hens have survived and with luck the two uninjured ones will be fine in a few days once settled.
WRT the one with the broken wing I think you should get her looked at by a vet (sorry I know more expense) who may be able to splint it for you, depending on the type of break. If she has a lot of tissue damage and bleeding I'm afraid the vet may suggest antibiotics too, to prevent infection. In the meantime you can bathe the cuts with warm salt water. I don't want to sound pessimistic, but often when a hen has had a trauma of this sort they do die of shock, either immediately, or delayed.
Sorry for the rotten start to your weekend.

Ye gods!!!!....you really do your best for your gals...and things still go wrong!
I'm really shocked for you...how are they this morning???
I've thought of all sorts of things about the broken wing- but my own conclusion would be take her to the vets.
It must be very painful for her- and may well get infected. They may be able to splint and give antibiotics- or suggest amputation.
(Your neighbours really should pay for this , so the cost shouldn't come into it)
I think I'd let them know that your going to the vet- just to forwarn them- and ask do they have pet insurance.
I don't think that's hostile- but you have to do the right thing by the chook.

How can something so awful have such a funny side too Jeez what a story. Those neighbours should have offered to pay for a vet themselves, they should not need to be asked, bloody rude of them if you ask me. AND to not have secured their garden so their dogs can get lost/run over by a car whatever shows they are completely irresponsible *spit spit spitHayley B

How horrid!Clever little Babs....I would have loved to have seen the lads face!...but sorry that Belinda didn't manage quite such an uncanny escape!
I love dogs....not allowed one!...but am so angered at the moment by how many irresponsible owners there are...and why do these irresponsible owners seem to opt for "potentially" dangerous breeds?!I know any breed can be dangerous in the wrong hands but in our area there seem to be so many Staffies/Rottweilers & Dobermans & other big terrier looking dogs, allowed to run off leads in play parks, poor fencing in gardens so can escape easily & my "favourite" loosely tied right outside shop doors, left to growl at anyone daring to want to leave or enter the shop!(& often when the owner comes to get them they're mere nippers themselves!)
Sorry...back to your Belinda!Like the others have said,I think a trip to the vets but before you go have a word with your neighbours about them paying for any treatment.the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.
Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.xx

Thanks all! Well they've all survived the night but are now reluctant to come out of the coop- no surprise there. Belinda does look a sorry state I'm afraid but is up and about and eating etc. She's lost loads of feathers but I didn't look too much at injuries yesterday as I didn't want to pull her about too much. Going up the garden now so I can check her out properly. It bought tears to eyes to see her this morning, she looks awful.I wouldn't be surprised if I loose either her or Betty to shock in the next few days. Will just have to wait and see. Is poultry spice or something worth trying to help them?Gardening forever- housework whenever
