  • Our first show

So we took our salmon Fav male (I named him Oaf) to the poultry show today! He got a second place!!! (out of 3) We are both very happy with the result and I think Oaf is too. We were told by the organiser of the show the deviations from the standard our bird displayed, he was very helpful and more than happy to do so. We are aiming to get a quality hen to breed with a younger male we have so next time we get a first

This evening we have put him back in the pen with the rest of the crew. Immediately he started fighting (and winning) against the Maran male, instead of a few little jumps they had a full on scrap!!! I bet he was just reasserting his authority on the pretenders to his top spot in the pecking order. We have joked that because he didn't win we should eat him (I think we should), however after his little scuffle I think he is hard as nails and we could keep him.

In summary we really enjoyed the show and will definitely enter birds in future shows.

Well done guys. Its a fantastic feeling when you get a prize. And now you have a better idea what to look for next time. I'd thought about showing some of my pure breds next year if I can find out where the shows are, this has given me encouragement.
Did you do any special preparation? or just wash'n'go?

It was pretty much wash 'n' go. A quick dip in soapy warm water, a little rinse and blow dry. We cut out the crusty ends of feathers that were pooey, and rubbed Vaseline on his legs. Just before the show we put Vaseline on his comb, which brought through the redness. He was fantastic throughout, hardly any protest at all. We found washing/grooming in a dimly lit room made him easily handleable.

Congrats - getting the first comes from experience and the more you go and the more advice you get then you will know what you are looking for when you buy/hatch new birds

I have always hated any form of showing animals...but...I have recently became VERY tempted by the idea!

Hi there well done! My Dorking hen only got a third but was in a mixed 'Rare Breed' class of 6 (Different show btw) and was up against a pair of Favs, a Minorca(I think) and a Russian Orloff plus my Cockeral -She is the better bird of the two, and mixed classes are always trickey (or so I'm told), the Fav hen got the first and the roo 2nd but mine will still mature so next time........

Dorking girl wouldn't stand nicely for her photo - she had 'been-looked-at-quite-enough-for-one-day-and-where-is-my-grain?-thank-you-very-much!'
