What would you recommend? Plastic or metal? I did have a plastic one, dropped it on the floor and broke it! The girls are currently using one of Dexter's old bowls.........any recommendations gratefully recieved!

I use an Eltex galvanised one 4.5 litre - it has been good for 3 years so far with no signs of future problems. Cannot remember the cost, I think about £25

This is the one - http://www.farmway.co.uk/smallholder...inker-3751.htm

I'm using a plastic gravity feed one, came with the equipment.

Galvanised should last a lifetime but I'm not sure if you can add cider vinegar to the water in it because of potential reaction. I like to add a tsp to their water everyday.

I use plastic washing up bowls. Cheap and do the trick. Filled up daily they should not be knocked over but you could always put a smooth clean stone in the bottom to weigh it down a bit more. You cannot add apple cider vinegar to any metal container. By the way Eco, the dosage for ACV is 10 ml per litre of water.

Washing up bowls for me too! Much easier to deal with than drinkers and cheaper too. I do use drinkers for chicks though so they cant get in and drown!

A belfast sink with a breeze block stuck in the middle to stop the chooks drowning is my chooks oasis at the mo.

If I could afford it, or if any came up second hand cheaply, galvanised feeders and water dispensers have stood the test of time and would be a worthy aquisition!

Thanks Richmond. Tsp = teaspoon to roughly a litre until I can find the ml measure

to stop the birds tipping over the washing up bowls, we wedge the bowls into old car tyres. That way the birds have a nice perch to sit on whilst drinking, rather than tryiong to get one the edge of the bowl and tipping it over.

I like the idea of washing up bowls. I've got a stone in the middle of Dexter's bowl at the moment, so they can't knock it over. Shall have a look at washing up bowls the next time I go shopping. Thanks everyone!

I got a couple of 5l plastic ones and they seem ok so far, but the favourite with the chooks is the kiddies paddling pool I fill for the geese...they all perch round the edge and bob up n down like those toy birds you can get for the edge of ypur glass. Very funny, and I cant keep them off, but I worry about them falling in.

We're currently using big dog food bowlls(plastic),but think I may switch to washing up bowls...now that we're putting straw in their run again, because the bowls are so low, they're getting full of straw almost as soon as we refresh them!
We switched from metal to plastic so we could add ACV.

The orange buckets from B&Q sitting in an old car tyre work well too. I have both those and the green drinkers in the runs so they have a choice.
