When I hatched out some Welsummers way back in March, I thought that they'd be near on a year old before the girls started laying, what with the shorter days and stuff. Anyway, Hebe has given me her very first egg For a first, it's HUGE - well 81g anyway; there was a bit of a blood streak on the shell so I bet it must have been a bit painful She's out in the run now doing the "I've laid an egg and she's gone and pinched it" song

Well done Hebe (and Maureen). Last year the pullets I hatched in March started laying in Oct/Nov so Hebe is laying right on time. Unfortunately (as you know) I didn't manage to hatch any pullets early on this year so am still waiting for that first egg from this year's Welsummer girlies. Not expecting anything before January but you never know ..........
My bantie girls from this Spring however have been laying for about 4 weeks or so, and already I have one that has decided to go broody, daft thing!
