Filthyrich, if they havn't started laying they should start soon, day length is what tells the bird that spring is coming and to start laying, don't worry about them if they don't start till Feb.
Nicos, not sure what the average hen lifespan is but my folks had a Shetland hen that lived till about 18 and was laying eggs till she dropped!
