  • Bizarre chook death?

My only Light Sussex has died. I found her lying under the the roosting bar.

It looks like she's fallen off the roost whilst asleep and broken her neck.

Checked her over and couldn't find any other explanation!

Roosting bar is about 2 foot six high.

This is worrying because my cockerels are roosting outside at 4 foot high and also my other brown hens use two roosting bars, one at 4 foot and one at 2 foot.

I was late to allotment this evening so they were all inside. The only way I thought there nmay be something up is that she hadn't layed an egg in the external nesting box. When I looked inside she was dead on the floor.

Its such a shame as she was only in with the two Minorca's to keep them company for the winter.
She was my last hen that I'd hatched myself, all others apart from the cockerels have been bought in.

Ah well, I may have to buy a few ex-bats now to keep the other two company for the winter!

In the 'wild' chickens would roost higher than that. Perhaps she had a chicken stroke, or heart attack?

Oh, what a shame Snadger I wouldn't have thought that the perch/roosting height would be the problem though - a friend of ours' chickens roost up in the trees in the summer?

Sorry about your poor chook Snadger.

She won't have fallen off the perch. Their ligaments do something weird and they 'lock on' to the perch in their sleep, so don't worry on that score about the others.

Very sorry to hear snadger. Just wondering if they don't fall off their perch then why do we have the saying? What was her name?

Dashy, I think the saying is "turned up her toes and dropped off the perch".

sorry to hear, but think it must of been something else that killed her then she fell off the perch....

As others have said, unlikely to just have "fallen" off the perch. Almost certainly something else was to blame. If she was healthy in all other respects - eating/drinking/up to weight and laying - then possibly she had a stroke.

What a shame Snadger. You've been really unlucky.
Some ex-batts would be good for now (specially for them!) - got 4 myself yesterday.

Snadger - if you've had them like this for a while and nothing similar has happened you've got to assume that it was some sort of problem that your specific girl had. Don't blame or worry yourself. It is a real downer though when you lose good chooks - you have my sympathy
