The other day I got it in my head to count the chooks - don't ask me why anyway we have disabled Aggie in her own stable with Christie keeping company so those two are accounted for so that leaves 35.....

Indoors stood counting with CB kept coming up with 34 ok so it's dark and the light in Chookenham isn't too hot. Next day outside various 32s 33s 34s and an odd 35. Yesterday went everywhere with a torch looking in all barns crooks and crannies just in case, nowt. Finally managed to count 35 twice when bribing them all into one spread out area with corn - relief.

Mr Tweedy in 'Chicken Run' always had his laydees in lines to count off - how's the hell did he do that then

I have enough trouble with six. Last night I looked in the coop and saw four bums and two heads and just assumed they were six different chickens

A mixed flock is much easier, although I don't have as many as you Hayley

I go; 6 Brown, 6 White, 4 Black, 2 Fluffs and a Cuckoo = 19 = great, all there!

When I add some more I'm going to go for a different colour again!

All well and good - but the number of times I've mistaken one or other of my Welsummers for an ex-batt when I'm doing the nightly count up!!!! (blame it on the torchlight)

Mind you, its worse trying to count children on a school trip - they CANNOT stay still! Just like chickens!

I couldn't count them all as a job lot! Mine are split up into various large enclosures etc according to breed, size and function.

So currently we have bantam layer pen with 13 in, bantam cock pen with 8 in (for fattening), large layers with 13 in (soon to be sorted out again with the growers), large growers with 11 in, 2 broodies and chicks in separate coops, total 15, 4 loose cocks who roost in the stable, and a couple of new girls still in quarantine in their own coop.

And that is quite enough!!
