  • Worms

One of my girls appears to have worms- When cleaning out the coop I found a load in one spot in the poo. Have been using Verm-x and just ordered some Flubenvet but should I be doing anything while I wait for it to arrive?
On the plus side- I think I know which one it is and she seems fine, still running around and eating and wanting treats- Just have it in the back of my mind that they can go downhill quick!
    All advice appriciated.

You could give her a hefty dose of garlic - a whole clove crushed, mixed with a little water, and then mix some bread in it all. You can feed this as often as you like. Garlic does not kill the worms but makes their "environment" less appealing and they are more likely to be passed out. A proper wormer however is still the best thing to use so as soon as your Flubenvet arrives make sure you worm all your chickens. Verm X is only designed as a preventative. I have never tried it, but several people on here who have done have commented that it didn't do much good.

      Hannah,

I'm new to chooks and have quickly developed an unhealthy obsession with poo and nether regions

What did the worms look like? Are they like the little grain of rice ones that cats and dogs get? Were there many?

they were quite long and round and white, have googled and it just said "round worms",
Dont have cats or dogs so afraid I can't compare.

oh and there were possibly 3-4 but I didnt really rummage. only found them in the poo pile under the perch, didnt find any around the garden on my clear up

Thanks Hannah, there is a picture of some in the poo gallery that Maureen posted for me. If anyone else needs to know, it is the last picture. Enjoy

Thanks eco chick- the last piccy looks exactly like the stuff I found. Shall try not to worry about them whilst waiting for the flubenvet- but not promising anything!

              Hannah,

I gave mine Flubenvet as a precaution last month. I cut raspberries in half and put as much Flubenvet on as it would hold. Chooks loved it. Other folk put it on grapes, raisins and cubes of bread. I always made 4 raspberry sarnies for 3 girls because one naughty minx would always steal a 2nd one from one of the others

This only works well if you have a small flock. If you have dozens pile it into their food as the instructions advise.
