you should try living out here where i do. when i took the car (mitsubishi galant) in for an MOT he said that he had to scrape kilos of mud away from the chassis with his bare hands just to check it. It was then i told him that it probably wasnt mud as i am surrounded by 600+ Holstein cows from next door!!!

Re foxes and cats ... my cat used to sit with the local fox in our back garden drinking from the paddling pool together ...

So not all foxes will go for a feline ...

Sorry to hear about your cockerel Walldanzig. I have to agree with Petal, electric fencing is great. I keep my hens in an electric fenced enclosure, and despite a strong fox population, my girls have stayed safe for 18 months. I do lock them into their eglu at night, but the other night a friend said she would put them away for me - and forgot , but all was well in the morning!

I do have strips of old carpet under the fence to prevent the fence shorting out with long grass, and check it twice a day. I always feel I shouldn't say how effective it is as it's tempting fate, but it might be worth you looking into it? If you have any questions about it, I'd happily answer them to the best of my ability.

Must just say that the bit about the Council releasing the foxes was incredible! What planet are they from??
