  • DIY Chicken House

As on earlier post I had looked into getting a Eglu, was about £350, have now decided to build my own.
Building the run will be easy enough as I built a run for the Guinea pigs and Rabbits years ago, building the main house though and nest box, how do I go about doing this, and are there any plans that anyone might have or about on the internet?

Any help would be great thanks.

Bramble Poultry has posted some plans for building your own on here. Lots of us have just converted a shed though, add perches inside, put in some boxes for nesting and Bob's your Uncle Think about fox and vermin -proofing when you're doing it
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

I've built one from Bramble's plans and have nearly finished a second so they are really good! I'm no joiner! The finished one has stayed dry even in this foul weather. Well worth a look - I've bought 2 books and some plans from internet but found Mike's easiest to follow.

My OH builds ours for about £50 each. Single skin external grade ply "boxes" on legs, silicone sealed joints so nowhere for mite to hide. Lift out slats/perches for easy cleaning. Each house takes about 12 full sized birds.

We build our own and although I wasn't impressed with the idea at first as I quite fancied on of those chi-chi ones you see advertized. I am now so glad we did. Not only are they larger and far more robust than many that you see, we've painted them bright colours to satisfy our grandson who was yearning for a yellow eglu. They were made from marine quality ply and although they are on a very exposed lottie I know they can take whatever the weather throws at them.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

To keep them dry thought they needed a bit more shelter when it was raining

the slide, keeps them occupied for hours, running round climbing up and then sliding down. Had to move it away from the fence, so they didnt get their leg caught as they whizzed down!
