Yay - First Minorca egg!

Despite the horrible weather and short days, my eldest Minorca pullet has started laying, bless her.

Don't usually get so excited about "first" eggs but she's a beautiful bird and I have high hopes for her.

Will have to wait a bit longer for her younger sister to start though.

That's fantastic news!! How old is she? Mine is about 25 - 26 weeks and looking beautiful

She's probably about that age too. Hatched in June but don't know exact date. I can't take much of the credit, she is not home-bred. I bought her late summer as a youngster of about 11 weeks from a local breeder, and was so impressed with her went back and bought another in October!

They are stunning aren't they? I have not kept Minorcas before but the two I have are just looking fantastic. Hopefully yours will start laying very soon too.

One of my young Wellies looks like she is about to start laying too. Her comb has shot up over the last couple of weeks and is getting very red. It will be lovely to have some brown eggs to go with the white ones. Also to have some larger eggs. Have been relying on my old faithful banties for all the eggs for the last couple of months.

How lovely Richmond. Despite waiting for the egg, the first from each pullet is still a lovely surprise isn't it?

I'm thrilled everyday when I get eggs and wipe them gently, put the date on and weigh them and note it down.

I bought mine at POL 3 months ago and up til now, nowt,.........zero,.........zilch!

Dying to see the large white egg they are perported to lay................Any chance of a piccie to tide me over until mine decide to perform?

PS I still reckon both of mine are hens and not one hen and one cockerel as I first thought. Both crests have flopped over now!

POL is a very misleading term. Some people call them POL from as early as 16 weeks, which is ridiculous. I've never known anything lay before about 24 weeks at the earliest.

The egg wasn't big, actually bantam sized, but hopefully they will be a good size before too long. It was lovely and white though.

I'm sure yours will lay soon. Remember, your weather has been a lot worse than ours. We actually had a very good summer and autumn, only getting real rain in the last month. My lady's comb has not actually flopped yet, but I think it will before too long.

My Minorca's are spending the winter indoors (in the greenhouse) so hopefully won't suffer too badly from the cold and wet we're having!

Yippee for you, and thanks for cheering me up I've been feeling sorry for myself thinking none of my chooks which hatched this year would lay before winter, but after your comment I got my diary out and counted..and they're just now 24 weeks..so hope yet. The stuff you learn on here is amazing
