        Jings ! Rats ! How horrible !
I've never had a problem with them but if I did I would kill them by fair means or foul.
But I would see no reason to take pleasure in it.

You're right of course Alice. It isn't a particularily pleasant task, sitting in a dark chicken coop with chooks above and around you and trying to stay as still as possible whilst focussing your sights on one spot.
The top and bottom of it is...........the rats are stealing my chooks food, rats can spread diseases and reach epidemic proportions very quickly, I don't particularily like using poison and the traps seem inneffective. The air rifle at close range kills them instantly.
Neighbours will be happy they have no rats, chooks will be happy they have some food to eat and I am happy that I have done the best I can to eradicate them.

Taking pleasure in killing rats, no, but there IS a certain satisfaction in a job well done. I don't LIKE killing cockerels, but there is that sense of "I made a good job of that!" as well as a dinner or so.

I would hazzard a guess that there's no more incidence of gamekeepers becoming serial killers than the rest of the population?

Gamekeepers are doing their job part of which is providing food. I still think gaining pleasure out of killing things is somewhat peverse.
