When I put the floor in my octagon hut I raised it two foot above ground level to keep it dry and vermin proof..........I thought.
Was still at the lottie as it was getting dusk today and I noticed rats climbing on each others shoulders and squeezing up the window rebate on the inside of my hut door. One rat was standing on another rats shoulders as another rat climbed over both using them as a rat ladder. I had to do a wee bit of fettling to the door to make it rat proof and just for good measure added two blocks of poison under the hut, where my chooks couldn't get at it.
If rats were the size of humans, methinks it would harken the end of the human race............

ai snadge - Phoebe and Fern - my "working girls" are great at ratting. got home yesterday after a long drive to Norfolk only to find three new rat runs through the cochins and indian game. So when i get home tonight from work, i will be going a ferretting!

If there is hiding space underneath, rats will like it there. If the underneath space is open to view (and easy to throw rocks through) that is something of a deterrent. Raised floor with walls down to the ground will NOT do much to put rats off.
