Took the chance and got myself some sex linked eggs. So in 21 days time we should have some more little chicky poos.

Collected them yesterday and set them today.

They're light sussex (female side) crossed with a RIR (male side) to make chicks with brown down female and chicks with white down male. Funny huh? You'd think it'd be the other way around

I'll keep you all updated as I did last time :-)

also had these ... still took months to find out which were which lol ... some that DDL has have black spots and were girls, and one of the cocks had brown splodges ... sorry to disappoint, but it only worked for about 4 of them.

That cross should work if the parents really are pure bred, but of course there is no easy way of telling whether there is just a bit of something else in there.
The reason the colours 'cross over' is something to do with the weird way the X and Y chromosomes work in chooks, and the colours being ON those chromosomes.

I have done eggs from the same place before and they're fine. Providing nothing new has been added since my last lot, they should be the same.

as soon as they hatch, pop some small flat plastic band chick leg rings on the males. that way as they grow you will still identify who is who.

Update

Well, after a quick candling on day 4, it seems something is happening. I checked a few of the eggs and they have veins to the side of the shell and a nice glob inside the egg.

Providing nothing goes wrong - we should be in for some little chicks!!

Hi,

Just as my luck would have it - THE ELECTRIC WENT OFF LAST NIGHT :-(

I don't know how long for but I heard my computer backup beeping away but fell back asleep, didn't look at the time so not sure how long it went off for....

The incy come back on after electric was restored as it is 'always on' unless the power is off.

Eggs are warm now so should they be ok??? It's day 5 today. Lets assume the electric was off for 2 hours (couldn't have been more) in a heated room.

What's the score?

Fingers crossed!!!!! Mother hens leave the nest for short periods when they're brooding so the eggs under them aren't always at a constant temperature and there's some cooling. Just let's hope it was a short "blip"

So, it's day 10 today. I am going to do some candling later on this evening to see how things are coming along.

Most of the eggs are getting lighter (developing), there are a few that are still heavy (duds) so I am sure some are developing - I don't think the power cut helped :-(
