I've always fed things like greens and carrot peel raw. But yesterday I got around to asking the veg stall on the market I work on (equestrian stall) if I could have their trimmings for my nags. What I didn't realise is that they do prepared veg too, so there is lots of lovely clean peelings. Carrot, parsnip, swede, cabbage, celery. But the swede peel is thick and there are whole tails of parsnip. So I wondered if I could cook these up with the carrot and parsnip tops (round slice off the end, which aren't safe for neds due to the risk of getting one caught in the windpipe and choking) and some of the other stuff and give it to the chooks?

I'd say yes, go for it cooked for them. All the veg trimmings and peelings in my kitchen go into a big pan of water and get boiled up for about 20 minutes or so before adding the lot to pellets as a mash. They all go crazy for it and there's never any left!My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

One big pan of veg soup coming up....Cass (our german shepherd) had some on her tea last night she adores veg raw or cooked, cant wait to see their expressions when I try it on the chooks. They walked round the porridge for 10 minutes waiting for it to explode or something so it could be funny.Anyone who says nothing is impossible has never tried slamming a revolving door

Ya know I never thought of cooking the carrot peel for the chooks, they don't eat them raw so everything goes to the nags...Hayley B

yeah, my girls love cooked veg peelings too.
i also stick the used (washed) egg shells in the oven for 15 mins then blitz them in the blender and add that to the mix too. get really hard egg shells now and i dont have to shell out (no pun intended) for grit anymore either.
dont feed the carrots to the nags as they get carrots from the farmer at £3 for a HUGE bag.

Wish Id had my camera Tipped a panfull into their tray after the pellets had gone and they ALL tried to get in at once, including the geese who have now cottoned on that porridge and stuff is yummy. Having the advantage of long necks the geese were winning so I chased them off to let the feathered fiends get a fair share. Guess they like veg soupAnyone who says nothing is impossible has never tried slamming a revolving door
