I waited till 3.30 today before collecting the eggs, they were all ok this time, just hope nobody decided to lay after bedtime will find out in the morning though
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there
I found out the answer to this first hand today!! One of the girls obviously laid her egg late yesterday cos I found it in the nest box when I let them all out this morning. It was frozen solid and hugely cracked no use to man nor beast (or to the chooks either)
Egg on a stick?

My honesty box is like a miniature nestbox, complete with straw and a perspex front.
I bury the egg boxes in the straw and up til now none have cracked that I know about.
I had a dozen in the box for couple of particularily cold days and nights and decided I'd better try them myself. Made ham and egg pies with them and they were delish!

I keep my chickens on the allotment and keep the eggs in egg boxes until I have enough to make up a dozen. the other day before christmas to froze and split threw them.
There was plenty of Hemcore in the nest box, so it was as cosy as it could be - or so I thought!!! If the temperature's dropping below freezing in the nest boxes, it's a sure way of stopping the girls sleeping in them

My OH, who insists the girls are mine and nothing to do with him, has put a thermometer in the coop today 'cos he's worried the girls are too cold. He said it was 4 degrees earlier, don't know what it is now though as it's too slippery for me to go outside and he's not done the nightly check yet. Not sure what heating he's got planned if the temp is below freezing.
I collected an egg from inside the hen house today, not late around 9ish and it was freezing cold and had a crack in it. Poor girls in there all night freezing, can't do no more than to stuff it with straw though!
The chooks should all be fine inside their coops, they're all wearing their duvets to keep warm and snuggling up to each other too. As long as they're dry and out of draughts there shouldn't be a problem. I really must remember to do a late egg collection though

Two of my cockerels are still roosting outdoors. I gave them eack a slice of bread last night cos it was dark when I got to the allotment and they were the only ones still outside. They are either very butch.........or just mad!

i've been putting a small drinker in the coop & it's not been frozen solid yet so they must be keeping quite a high temperature in there
Wow, it must be really warm in there!! I've been bringing the drinkers into an unheated conservatory each night and they're still frozen solid next morning!

Hmm what does that make my 11 hens and one roo who all insist on living in the fir tree - out of my reach (and hopefully foxes) one of whom has started laying and can't quite beleive it! They do have perfectly good housing but they are rebellious teens (POL age) and won't go to bed!
Well..............the frost finally got through to my eggs in the honesty box.........twelve cracked eggs after last nights ridiculously low temperatures.
I'll wait until they thaw out (about March the way we are going!) then beat them all up in some chook pellets with some poultry spice added as an extra protein kick for the chooks!

Couldn't you put them into a pan of cold water and bring it to the boil 'n hard boil them for the chooks?
