  • Eggs in honesty box?

I'm a bit worried that the eggs I place in the honesty box may freeze with the cold snap we're having just now.
What will be the effect of this, will they burst or what will the punters find when they crack one open?

Oooh, good point. Can't you put them in a large sturdy container lined with loads of straw or shredded paper?

Hmm..there's a point! ...can't you stick a broody on top of them???...although I think Glutton's idea is a wee bit better than mine!

My box is a big thick polystyrene one which insulates summer and winter. Perhaps you could try lining your box with some sheets?

Leave one outside and see what happens. Then you'll know if you have to insulate them.

            If they freeze, they crack.

My fridge regularly freezes itself, just for fun, so I know

Thats good news in a way TS as surely people wouldn't buy them if they were cracked?

they'll crack but you may not see it until the defrost. It's also possible they will crack a little without anyone noticing which would be more dangerous

I found out the answer to this first hand today!! One of the girls obviously laid her egg late yesterday cos I found it in the nest box when I let them all out this morning. It was frozen solid and hugely cracked no use to man nor beast (or to the chooks either)
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

The upside of Myrtle No-Knickers being broody is that the eggs aren't in danger of freezing
