  • Pop Hole

I think I must be very dim .... I have been following all of the threads and check every day. I keep see pop hole mentioned - can someone tell me what a pop hole is. I am assuming it is a way for chickens to get in and out of their houses, but how does it work please and is it a good idea to have one?

It's a small chicken sized door (can be any design really - hinged, sliding etc) that lets the birds in and out of the house. A person sized door or access point eg lift off roof is also required though to access the house for cleaning, examining birds etc. There is no reason why the chickens cannot be let out of a normal door but pop holes let in less weather so this is more practical.

We all wonder what it is when we start looking into getting hens - then we very soon lapse into the jargon and forget that we had to learn it too!

WITHOUT having to look it up! Do you know what a sally port is?

Is it the little round window thing that the sailors pushed their lady of the night through when Mrs. Sailor or Captain Pugwash came to inspect the chaps quarters?

              Nope! Sounds good though!

I will post the answer tomorrow if no-one guesses before then.

Sally port? That's what I did yesterday - I sallied forth through the snow to make sure we had some nice port to go with the stilton!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Sorry for the delay - the answer is that a Sally Port is the hole the Sally or padded bit of a bell rope goes through.
